Both the food and information were dispensed in just the right portions. Our guide lead thought-provoking discussions on such topics as Maine’s lobster industry and the threat posed to it by climate change.

We heard from the talented chefs, who are passionate in their support of using local and sustainable products. The food presented on the tour is locally sourced, and we learned about the farmers, fishermen, and foragers who supply these ingredients. At all stops, however, we were welcomed warmly and treated as honored guests. We visited several restaurants that were not normally open until later in the day, so our tour participants were the only patrons, which was a nice special touch. I was excited by the opportunity to try six renowned Portland restaurants, five of which were new to me – but I’ll be making return visits to them all as the dishes at each one of them were creative and so delicious. Her background as a food editor, along with her open and friendly personality, made Karen the perfect guide. We were some of the first clients of this new food tour and came away totally impressed. One recommendation I have is to prepare a handout for the tour participants with additional restaurants recommendations in the city that may not have been on the tour but also provide local, sustainable, delicious food. My favorite dish, however, was without question the Mandilli al Vero Pesto Genovese from Solo Italiano (see photo) - incredible. My favorite part was having the unique opportunity to be one of the first customers at Luke's Lobster (it wasn't even opening until the day after)! It was really cool to meet one of the founders and try a sample of their lobster roll. It was also great to have the chance to meet chefs and owners from many of the spots. I learned many interesting things about the Maine food system and how chefs in the state and Portland specifically have incorporated sustainable practices and local foods into their work. Our tour guide Bryce (who started the company with his wife) was very knowledgable and I could tell he has done first-hand, up-to-date research. I liked that we tried many different cuisines and styles.

As a solo traveler and foodie, I liked this tour a lot because it allowed me to try multiple different and popular restaurants in a short amount of time as well as meet other people.
